Buying a new car is an exciting and adventurous process. However, once you've decided on the right make and model for you, proper maintenance is the key to making sure you get the most out of that vehicle. When you own a Mazda, you want to ensure that you protect your investment and enjoy years of stress-free motoring. And that starts with regular servicing from a garage you trust. At Smith Haven Mazda, we work tirelessly to not only provide a great range of new and used Mazda vehicles, but to provide the expert servicing that will help your customers drive happy for years to come.

But at a time where many of us are feeling the pinch and trying to cut costs wherever we can, is oil change servicing really that important? How do you know that you're changing your oil as often as you should? And what will happen to your vehicle if you don't stick to your servicing schedule? Here we'll answer all those questions and more...

Why is an oil change service so important?

Your Mazda's engine is made of dozens of moving parts which are in constant contact with one another. The more you use your car, the more you expose these parts to heat and potential friction. Your engine oil ensures that these parts get the lubrication they need for a healthy, happy engine. Without it, engine trouble is sadly inevitable.

However, as you travel, your engine oil becomes thickened by a growing sludge of particles and contaminants that occur as a result of normal use. While your oil filter helps to keep your engine oil as pure as possible, it cannot do that job indefinitely. That's why it's so important to get your oil changed regularly.

When should you get your oil changed?

But how regularly should you be changing your oil? On a standard service schedule an oil change is necessary every 6 months or 5,000 miles (whichever comes first). If, however, you need to cover a lot of miles in your Mazda, you may opt for a long-life servicing schedule which uses a special longer-lasting oil. In this instance, 12 months or 10,000 miles is a good time for an oil change.

An oil service also includes a complimentary inspection of your vehicle so we can see how your brakes, exhaust, tires etc. are getting on.

What else should be changed as part of your service regimen?

As well as regular oil changes we also recommend changing your air / pollen filter every 2 years. Your brake fluid can also become compromised by moisture and brake dust so this is also recommended to be changed every 2 years. Spark plugs for gas fuelled cars should be changed every 3 years or 30,000 miles.

What's more, your serpentine belt should also be changed every 4 years or 40,000 miles. When this wears down, drivers run the risk of breakage. This can cause the engine's pistons to impact on the cylinder head which can be disastrous for the engine.
